On our way out ... we stopped as we entered San Francisco for this photo. Check out the Golden Gate bridge in the background.

2003.10.10 18:24
A couple of hours north of San Francisco, after plodding through heavy traffic for miles, we made our first of many gas stops.

2003.10.11 09:46
That night we stayed at a b&b in Philo, CA. Very romantic - ha ha. I tried to set up this photo the next morning but Martin, being Martin, had to wave his arms around and mess up the picture ...
Martin: Actually, I was trying to be a bird. If you look closely I am trying to wave my arms fast enough to get off the grounf and Bryan is trying to hold me down. (2003.10.16 14:10)

2003.10.11 10:17
Ah, we finally made it to highway 1 - where the good riding begins.

2003.10.11 10:17
Greetings, Earthling ...

2003.10.11 10:17
Strike a pose.

2003.10.11 10:22
More of the coast along highway 1 north of San Francisco.

2003.10.11 10:22
Bryan's 2002 Honda CBR 600 F4i was fully loaded for the trip. Who said sportsbikes can't go touring?

2003.10.11 11:05
Highway 1 coastline.

2003.10.11 11:53
Later in the day we stopped in Legget, CA for the famous drive-through tree. Here's Martin paying our way in - thanks Martin!

2003.10.11 11:56
Martin's in the tree.

2003.10.11 12:01
And so is Bryan. We should have both gone in together. But who would take the picture?!?

2003.10.11 14:55
We stopped for dinner in Eureka, CA. Afterwards, when we were getting gas, it started to rain. Oh well!

2003.10.11 16:12
Coastline, far northern CA. In the rain.

2003.10.11 16:12
The roads were wet but driveable.

2003.10.11 16:12
Bryan's Honda handled it all with aplomb. So did Martin's BMW, which would have been in the picture except he's still a few miles back ...
Martin (of course): Well, first off I was more like only 1/2 mile back and the reason, of course, was because I kept getting spray from Bryan's tail and could not see the clear lines through the twisties. So, I backed off so I could skillfully negotiate all the roads. It was most definately NOT because I was going slower :) (2003.10.16 14:18)

2003.10.11 17:46
Martin shows us what he thinks of the Econo Lodge in Crescent City, CA. Actually it was nice, clean, and cheap.
Duh: Kind of like Bryan! (2003.10.16 14:19)
jerrysanto@webtv.net: hey , where did you say the bathroom was? (2004.09.10 16:46)

2003.10.12 09:04
The next day we started out only a few miles from the Oregon border. In the distance, through the trees, you can see Martin rounding a bend.
The guy ins the distance: See! See! I KNEW I was ahead of Bryan at some point. Yeah, yeah, I know - only because he stopped to take the picture - but it still counts! (2003.10.16 14:21)

2003.10.12 09:05
Go Martin!

2003.10.12 09:13
This is what the roads look like near the Oregon/CA border. Quite nice.

2003.10.12 10:13
Hey, we made it to Oregon! We stopped in the first small village to warm ourselves up. Oregon is rather chilly in October!
That handsome man on the right: Yeah, and apparently, in Oregon, you also travel back in time to the 1950s. It's wierd, but hey... it was fun. What Bryan didn't tell you is that when we left we sped out of there and went 150mph. That cop didn't have a chance! (2003.10.16 14:27)

We're just about warm now and ready to go!

2003.10.12 14:56
We made it to Crater Lake! This is the view from the visitor's center.

2003.10.12 14:57
Check out the snow on the trees up on the ridge. This is gonna be one cold ride!
Mr. Long Johns: I have to say, Crater Lake was THE COLDEST ride I have ever done. And I've been in the desert in the morning and on the top of Mt. Lassen (a couple of thousand feet higher that this). But, man, was this one of the BEST rides! I'm not sure I thought so at the time (cold, gravel everywhere, tiny twisty roads with cliffs...). We rode around the entire ring of this volcano (an intimidating site to be sure), hiked down to the water - all in a race against the clock. We had to make sure to head out of there before sun down or else - REAL BRRR! (2003.10.16 14:35)

2003.10.12 15:14
Crater Lake. The deepest lake in north America at 1920 feet, and one of the deepest lakes in the world.

2003.10.12 15:18
Brrrr ...

2003.10.12 15:18
Martin is happy that we made it, but could have done with an extra pair of long johns ...

2003.10.12 15:22
There are lots of scenic views from around the lake on Rim Drive.

2003.10.12 15:25
The one on the left: Aw! How cute! Just for the record, Bryan put his arm around me at the last minute. I was not aware what would await me later that night in the hotel room - needless to say I think the cozy B&B the first night set a bad precedent! (2003.10.16 14:39)

2003.10.12 15:29
Yep, it was cold up on the ridge alright ...

2003.10.12 15:29
But no problem for the Honda.
Or: the BMW! (2003.10.16 14:40)

2003.10.12 15:43
Gorgeous Crater Lake!

2003.10.12 15:44
The water is the bluest blue you have ever seen. It's so blue that it's green around the edges.

2003.10.12 16:19
We hiked down to the lake edge and back up again. That'll warm you up!

2003.10.13 09:06
On our way out of Klamath Falls the next morning, we saw a snow-capped Mount Shasta in the distance to the south. The white brush all along the highway is actually frozen. It was COLD but beautiful! What a great ending to a great trip!
